P. Rx

  • Flask + 2 shot glasses
  • Comes in a presentation box
  • Perfect for all your medicinal compounds

On seeing this flask, we were curious if alcohol was ever prescribed by a doctor. We'd heard about folks in the 1800s taking "tonics" and "compounds," many of which were mainly alcohol. But did doctors ever prescribe alcohol just on its own?

At the very least, the answer is yes during Prohibition. In order to carry a flask like this around legally, you would have needed a "Prescription form for Medicinal Liquor," which came with a tear-off stub, which you theoretically would keep with the alcohol to prove you were allowed to imbibe.

This prescription is of questionable provenance, so don't go flashing it around to the cops if they ask you to walk a straight line. The prescription on the side of this flask instructs the patient to take one swig by mouth and repeat until empty, but we recommend you use the little shot glasses that come with it to measure out precisely one ounce, cause it's more fun that way. Plus, then you can share since this set has 2 shot glasses. Not that you should ever share prescriptions, mind you. Just this once.
