Timmy's Costume Corps: Epic Creations

Please put something on this monkey.
We've been asking you to clothe Timmy for SDCC now for 8 years, and in the process we've received some epic creations. We wanted to introduce you to the humans behind some of those inspirational (aspirational?) cosplay ideas each week leading up to Comic-Con. First up...

Meet Laurie M!

Laurie owns the hands and brains behind Timmy's very first Jedi robe, and his Kaylee, Wash, Ikea Monkey, Helena / Rachel / Sarah from Orphan Black, and Sock Monkey costumes! That's a lot of creating! Let's ask her a few questions...

What do you like to do?

I've always loved to read and sew. When I was a child, I would sew doll clothes; as I got older I've made pillows, curtains, quilts, and all of my son's Halloween costumes as he was growing up. I've also taught myself knitting, cross stitch, and beading. I introduced my niece and a couple of my son's friends to knitting, too. For a few years I had an online jewelry store. I love making pretty things.

I love sci-fi conventions, too. My first con was Dragon*Con in 2008. I brought my son and we had such a blast! I've been to a few more since then, and I wish I could go much more often.

What flavor of geek are you?

I'm definitely a sci-fi geek. I remember watching the original Battlestar Galactica when I was a kid. What's funny is I didn't even know I was a geek. I knew the word, but I didn't realize it applied to me. None of my friends liked the things that I did. It wasn't until I met a group of people on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan board in 2003 that I realized that THESE ARE MY PEOPLE! Now I embrace it. I love Doctor Who, V (the original), Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, and all things Joss Whedon, especially Firefly. My two cats are named Malcolm and Wash.

How do you get your inspiration?

I usually start with my own fandoms, of course, since if I love the subject, I'm going to love what I make. I also try to aim for what will be unique, or ironic, like the monkey-wearing-a-monkey-costume costumes I made.

If you had to give others one tip about costuming Timmy, it would be

Just go with what you love, and have fun!
