Sparky the Stunt Dog

  • Cooperate to make the colony survive through the winter
  • And avoid being eaten by the zombies
  • Without being voted off the island

Dead of Winter sounds like a cross between a roleplaying game and the soap opera that is AMC's The Walking Dead. (We're not knocking it. We're just commenting on the addictive quality of its narrative.) The game's set in winter during a zombie apocalypse. Everyone at the table has a main objective that encourages players to work cooperatively for the good of the human colony, plus everyone has a secret objective which may actually thwart the main objective. There's also the possibility that someone drew a Betrayer card, which makes him or her just appear to be pursuing the main objective, when in actuality this survivor is crazypants and trying to take the entire colony down. Like ya do.

The Crossroads Deck makes for interesting narrative. We never were fans of the Random Encounter Tables. "Wait. I'm in an abandoned dungeon, covered in dust and cobwebs, and suddenly I come across a group of Dwarves spoiling for a rumble?" The Crossroads Deck has an if/then mechanism. If the card's very specific conditions are met, then the rest of the text on the card kicks in, giving for some appropriately-timed flavor text that really adds another dimension to the game.

For randomness, there are a lot of dice involved, mostly of the 6-sided variety. However, special mention is owed to a d12 with zero pity, called the Exposure Die. It gives your survivor the chance to experience instant death. No saving throw. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. We predict that Plaid Hat Games will need to create extras of this die to sell as add-ons because they're likely to end up in garbage disposals after particularly frustrating timing.
