Time to Pay the Piper
So honestly we don't know what's behind the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, but one thing we do know is that the rats weren't introduced as a plot point until the 16th century (read: plague times). So the original story wasn't about the Pied Piper getting back at his no-longer-rat-infested deadbeat customers. It's just a story about somebody walking away with a bunch of kids. Might be a story about a recruiter for the only-slightly-prior-in-the-grand-scheme-of-things Children's Crusade. Might be a story about the resettling of Transylvania, which puts the children's own progeny smack dab in the midst of another crazy story. Or it might be a story about children coming to bad ends at the hands of a deviant, the 13th century equivalent of a stranger in an unmarked van with candy. All we know is that this one is attempting to take all the numbers. But he's not going to get away with it, because Pi's pretty darn irrational.
