There is nothing better for the average Hobbit than the peaceful life. A long, uneventful day in the Shire sounds like heaven, but for Bilbo Baggins, it was not to be so. Adventure awaited him. And although Hobbits can surely defend themselves well enough, anybody who is only three feet tall might need a weapon every now and again.
Luckily for Bilbo, Dwarves are talented metalworkers who make many a good trade with the weapons they forge.
