Where wee mad scientists get electrified

Historically, parents aren't too keen on letting their kids play with electricity. Sticking your finger in the light socket is generally frowned upon, as is licking batteries. (We did it and turned out just fine, but the times, they are a-changin'. Although the studies are saying that you really should let your kid eat dirt once in a while and abide by the 5 Second Rule for food dropped on the floor. Build those immune systems early!) When your kid isn't eating cookies covered in dog hair, we recommend they play with the Electronics Advanced Circuits kit. It's a seriously cool toy that lets your geekling experiment with electricity without all those dangerous side effects.

The kit works a lot like your favorite toy construction bricks. You snap various parts together, following one of the 168 experiments outlined in the manual or branching off on your own once you understand the basics. Most of the wires are built into the blocks, so you don't have to worry about wires everywhere. Use the sound module to build an ambulance siren. Incorporate capacitors in your circuits to store and discharge electricity for specific functions, such as a countdown clock and a red-green alternate flasher. Test out the indispensable 555 timer to build some complicated circuits. Use an operational amplifier and an FM radio module to build an alarm clock. As dorky as it is to say, "It's a snap!" it really is a snap to learn the basics of electronics with this kit. Who knows, maybe your kid will be the next Hilary here at ThinkGeek!
