Oh, give me a home where the lil' robots roam

Okay. So we'll admit it. This xkcd had more than one of us here at ThinkGeek World Domination HQ sniffling. It was totally something we got in our collective eyes. What with all the R/C helicopters flying through the air and powdered caffeinated candy being passed around here, you can totally understand. *sniff*

What if you had your own little Mars rover? Except instead of roving Mars it was roving your living room, searching for signs of life, taking pictures, and sending them back to home base? And what if this rover could be programmed by someone with no programming skills or robot expertise whatsoever?

Romo is a little robot whom you hook your iPhone (or iPod) into to be his brain and nervous system. Through the iPhone's touch screen he responds to pokes, uses his camera to figure out how close you are, and relies on the accelerometer/gyroscope to know when someone's holding him. You can remotely control and interact with him through the app, which runs on any iPod Gen 3 or later, iPhones 3GS and later, iPads, and any computer running OSX 10.6 or better.

And if you're not feeling controlling, you can let him wander around his world. He can tilt up to 45° backward or 15° forward to get a better view and spin 360°. With iPhone 4S and later, he can be a wandering telepresence, with 2-way video capabilities. Romo in a colleague who couldn't attend the meeting or bring a distant relative to be part of a celebration. Send him on a mission around your party to move to the beat and snap random photos of attendees. He can even track their faces to make sure he's getting a good shot.

Programming him to learn new responses is a snap, even if you've never programmed before. You can "train" him visually. App updates give him new actions and behaviors. And if you really want to go wild, Romo's SDK is available for you to build custom pieces for him. And the side of the box says he has the ability to "learn behaviors from other robots in the wild," presumably other Romos. We don't want him picking up any of Bender's habits, although Roomba wouldn't be bad....
