You've Got Mail!

The image of ThinkGeek's workplace tends to be of R/C helicopters and Nerf projectiles constantly flying as we gorge on caffeinated candy. And that's pretty close to right. But not all of us here at ThinkGeek were always so footloose and fancy-free. Some of us have worked for those corporate behemoths that have pretty rigorous IT policies for security reasons. And one of the pains about that kind of place is that you might work a 12 hour day, but you can't check your personal email.

That's what your own phone is for, right? But maybe you don't want to pull it out every minute to see if your loan's been approved or your resume got a response. Let Dream Cheeky's Webmail Notifier do that for you in the background.*

This little envelope plugs into your USB port and lights up when you get mail. How's that different from the notification in your status bar? With 9 different colors and 10 (optional) sound indicators, you can set it up so you know exactly which account got mail. Blue? Somebody's mentioned you on Twitter. Orange? New mail on your personal account. The web site says it supports Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook Express, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, and POP3 accounts (you can enter your own server details). Plus if you're constantly bumping up against a capacity issue on your mail server, you can set it to warn you if you're nearly there.

Out of the box, the software and drivers are Windows-compatible, but industrious individuals have written their own Linux drivers, available on GitHub and SourceForge. Folks have posted ways they're using the device to monitor server load, keep up with their IMs, and all sorts of creative uses.

* Note: This requires local software to run, so if your workplace has software installation locked down, this ain't going to help you.
