A DIY project for budding engineers
We're huge fans of getting our hands on stuff to learn how it works. Books, websites, and videos are great for learning new things, but nothing beats having the raw materials in your hands and building something yourself to really grok it fully. If you or your geekling have the yearning to learn about how motors work, this DIY kit will allow you to build a motor and experiment with it.
The Simplest Motor kit contains a colorful outer body, a circular magnet, and some copper wire. You provide the D battery and your DIY skills. Making the coil of copper wire as perfect as possible it the key: the closer to perfect you get, the faster your motor will run. Once your motor is complete, the electricity from the battery runs through the coil of wire, forming a magnetic field. The coil will then push away from the magnet with enough force to turn it over and over again. Once you've mastered the simple motor, you can work on those hoverboards we desperately need.
