Even a Ninja needs to know the time
It is 1:58am, and all is quiet in Kochi Castle. Lord Yamanoshi, his vassals, and his consorts are sound asleep on their tatami. Guards stand ever alert outside the sliding rice-paper shoji doors. All is quiet. Still and peaceful. Meanwhile, in the darkness, a Ninja crept along the corridor. His footfalls as silent as moonbeams, he crawled through the shadows. His target - Lord Yamonoshi, himself.
The assassin, having prepared for weeks for this night, knew that at precisely 2am, new guards with fresh eyes and alert minds would replace the previous shift. The change would happen swiftly and efficiently. It was then that they were at their most vulnerable. The Ninja knew that the momentary shift of attention would be the perfect opportunity to strike down the liege-lord, and Regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi would use the ensuing chaos to consolidate power in Kochi prefecture.
His timing had to be precise. Unfortunate, then, that wristwatches hadn't been invented. The Ninja, off by a few seconds, was discovered, beheaded, and Lord Toyotomi's plans were thwarted. To be honest, though, even if he had a wristwatch, he probably would have been seen - those glowing hands standing out like beacons in the darkness.
Which is why we grabbed these new Nero Ninja watches by Tokyo Bay. The face and hands are black-on-black, maintaining a certain stealthy profile while keeping accurate time. Solidly built, they're not cheaply made like so many watches imported from the East.
