Pizza dude's got 30 seconds.
So, there's a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie coming out tomorrow, and that got us to thinking about how TMNT has been part of our lives ever since two guys in 1984 had a brainstorming session and made each other laugh. In the first TMNT comic, the quartet is created the same way as Daredevil (TMNT was spoofing many comics popular at the time): getting hit with a canister of radioactive ooze. The four turtles mutated into four teenagers and, under the tutelage of Splinter, learned the skills of the ninja and found their signature weapons. A bunch of smart/lucrative marketing and merchandising deals later, and the cartoon and toy line were born. With that cartoon and the toys, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cemented places in the hearts of children of the 80s forever.
In all the years that Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello (in random order always, because we love them all) have been a part of our lives, what have we learned from them? Well, if we thought we liked pizza before the cartoon turtles, we most definitely loved pizza after them. The word "cowabunga" became part of our vocabulary (a little under two months before Bart Simpson first said it). Oh, and instead of using sticks as guns as we pretended we were in G.I. JOE or Cobra, we now wielded sai and katana (i.e., short and long sticks, in pairs) and used them to hit each other (don't tell our moms).
We also learned is how important it is to be on a good team, especially if it's a team of four (Three Musketeers & D'Artagnan, Ghostbusters, TMNT, The Who, and endless other examples). We learned the importance of staying close-as-shell to your siblings, and always listening to the wisdom of your rat of a parent. And finally, we learned that sometimes the only way to bring out the best in people is to expose them to mutagenic ooze.
What could be better than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? The only thing we can think of is a ninja squad of the actual artists for which the turtles were named.
In honor of all these fond TMNT memories, we'll definitely be ordering pizza this weekend and wanted to share the love:
We're going to randomly pick five people who place an order on our site between 8/7-8/10 and send them a pizza!*
Here's hoping you're one of the lucky ones. Cowabunga, dude!
*It's going to be in voucher form, which will let you order a pizza pie of tasty, cheesy goodness!
