In memory of Aaron Swartz

Aaron Swartz

Aaron Swartz, courtesy of ragesoss.

The geek community lost an important young member this weekend when Aaron Swartz took his own life on Friday, January 11.

Aaron founded Demand Progress, was instrumental in the creation of Reddit, and when he was only 14 years old, co-authored the RSS 1.0 standard. However, despite his enormous talent and passionate pursuit of freedom, depression did not spare Aaron Swartz. He was just 26.

Life is filled with so many incredible moments, but for many the pain of living outweighs all of the beauty. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, over 350 million people around the globe suffer from depression. Depression does not discriminate on the basis of age, intellect, or socio-economic status. Effective treatment is often available, and yet for some the darkness closes in too quickly.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

For this reason, we are making a $1,000 donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. AFSP is the leading national non-profit exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, and advocacy.

Our thoughts go out to Aaron's family, friends, and all those touched by Aaron's work--which, given the scope of his work, means we're basically talking about the entire Internet.

And we encourage everyone to show kindness to those who are in need.

meaningless icon! I read about this last night - there's something dreadfully ironic about my RSS feed delivering this message to me. Almost... haunting. This is very sad news, indeed.

meaningless icon! This totally breaks my heart. So young and so much to give. Depression is an overlooked medical condition that many deal with everyday..and are ridiculed for. RIP..

meaningless icon! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. It is horrific to lose a loved one to suicide. I pray for all of them to find some level of comfort because the torment can eat away at you. I am so sorry that Aaron felt this was the only way he could get the pain to end. For anyone who feels the same please seek out help. Every life is precious and at times the darkness is so strong we need someone to guide us back to the light.

meaningless icon! How heart breaking that someone so talented could not see his own worth. A reminder to not let any moment pass that could encourage anther human. I would also like to give mad props to the Amen button.

meaningless icon! That is a tragedy. What a beautiful boy. Inside and out. You can see it in his eyes. What a shame he couldn't see it. But the pain is over now for him. Right now he is wrapped in folds of love and joy.

meaningless icon! May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the warm sun shine on your face. May the soft rain fall on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hands.

meaningless icon! my heart when i read about Aaron Swartz death. i don't for one minute believe that he was a coward, i have seen him speak and know he had great strength. suicide itself is a disease and we need to research a cure.

meaningless icon! This truly is sad to hear and I didn't even know this intelligent man. However, I do know that he was much too young to die and he had so much going for him in life, just by reading this article. My condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone that he inspired. I hope you are resting peacefully in heaven now, Aaron.

meaningless icon! I've been there. I am lucky in that my attempt was not successful, and that I have been able to get treatment. My heart just breaks for Aaron and his family, and I sincerely hope that his pain is over. Thank you for taking this issue seriously and for your donation.
