Hurricane Sandy wind map

Wind map of the US using data from this morning, October 30, 2012.

Unless you've been living under a rock--hopefully a very warm, cozy, and safe rock--you've doubtless heard about hurricane Sandy and its trip up the east cost of the US.

ThinkGeek HQ is located in Fairfax, Virginia, just southwest of Washington, DC and the Potomac river, which is about to flood downtown DC in Georgetown, if predictions and photographs are correct. While we were lucky enough to escape damage--aside from some downed trees and dripping windows--shelters are still open across much of the east coast, and cities like New York, the coast of New Jersey, the Delmarva peninsula, and the Shenandoah are looking worse for wear this morning. And Sandy's not done yet.

Red Cross

Since we're sitting high and dry with internet and a stockpile of TacBac, we thought we'd pitch in to the relief effort by dedicating our monthly $1,000 donation to Red Cross in support of shelters, cots, food, and water for those more impacted by Sandy than ThinkGeek.

Red Cross currently has more than 250 shelters set up across the northeast and we hope our donation helps bring some comfort to those who had to leave their homes for higher, safer ground.

If you'd like to help, too, we hope you'll consider a donation to Red Cross or a local relief shelter to help keep food stocked, both for Sandy and future storms. The Red Cross is also encouraging blood donations from those who can leave home safely because more than 100 blood drives were cancelled in Sandy's wake, and it's always a good time to donate.

Tomorrow is October 31 after all, which will bring on both our yearly epidemic of vampires and high blood sugar levels. We're betting there will be more than a few Hurricane Horse costumes out and about, too.

From everyone at ThinkGeek, here's hoping you have a dry, safe, and happy Halloween!

Pumpkins by @comic_fiend using some of our templates.

We've had a Pinterest account for awhile now, but we haven't done anything nefarious with it yet. Let's change that, shall we?

ThinkGeekoween Pinterest Challenge of DOOOOOOM

Since you guys love Halloween as much as us--we can tell from the photos you've posted to our Facebook wall and shared on Twitter--let's do something with Halloweenery on Pinterest.

  • Pin a photo of your geeky pumpkin, costume, or other Halloweenery handiwork with tag #ThinkGeekoween by 12 noon ET Friday, 11/2 and enter the url into our form (now closed) below.
  • We'll choose our favorites and repin them to our ThinkGeekoween board. Are we biased on what's geeky and awesome enough to go on our board? Probably. Them's the breaks.
  • We'll let the masses vote by repin through 6pm ET Friday, 11/2. We'll keep adding pins to our ThinkGeekoween board until the close of the contest, but as you can guess, you have a better chance of winning if you pin it soon, so get on that.
  • The 3 pins from our ThinkGeekoween board with the most repins from unique users will each win a $100 ThinkGeek gift certificate. If you don't have your Twitter account linked from your Pinterest page, we might have to do some acrobatics to get in touch with you if you win. This could be interesting.

Some details you might be interested in if you're into details and stuff: 1. You can pin more than one thing with the tag #ThinkGeekoween, and we may pin more than one of your pins to our ThinkGeekoween board, but even if your three pins make it to the top three slots, we'll choose two more winners. 2. We will make every reasonable attempt to verify that the item you pin is your own and not from the internet at large. (Don't be tricksy.) 3. Your pin can be something you've already pinned before; just add the tag #ThinkGeekoween. 4. No purchase necessary to enter, but you will need a Pinterest account, which is free.

Make sense? Get pinning, and watch our board on Pinterest!

P.S. We went to the pumpkin patch last week and had a good time. Here is photographic proof:

Cthulhu Ski Mask for Halloween by Cherie Burbach

Greetings Love-Crafters!

Are you semi-permanently attached to your needles or hooks? Do you find yourself charting the stitches in other people's sweaters while standing in line at the grocery store? Have you ever snuggled a ball of yarn and talked to it like it was an adorable baby animal?

Yes? Then join us at ThinkGeek for a Knit & Crochet Night on Friday, November 16th!

We only have space for 25 local-to-us geeks, so we're going to randomly choose attendees from the submission form below. You can bring a plus one along, but you have to note him or her when you sign up, and we would appreciate it if your guest was also yarn crafty. (We don't want anyone feeling left out, of course.)

To make things more exciting and generous, you'll be entered in our mystery prize raffle just for attending, but you can increase your odds with another raffle ticket for each new, handmade knit or crocheted item you bring with you. We'll donate your finished pieces--whether completed before the event or during--to Knitters and Crocheters Care, a local charity that will distribute our hats, scarves, blankets, shawls, sweaters, or socks to those in need in the Virginia, DC, and Maryland area.

The details:

  • Knit & Crochet Night will be Friday November 16th, 2012 at ThinkGeek HQ at 11216 Waples Mill Rd, Suite 100, Fairfax VA 22030.
  • Older-than-12 geeklings may attend, but they will be considered your one companion if they do.
  • Doors will open at 5:45pm. Prepare to have your hand stamped and your email ticket checked.
  • We'll provide fun and camaraderie all night, pizza and beverages at 6:30pm, and a raffle at the end of the night--but we aren't providing needles, hooks, or yarn.
  • Bring your WIP (work-in-progress) and any FOs (finished objects) you'd like to show off (especially geeky ones!).
  • Looking to destash? Bring in your unwanted yarn and we'll donate it to the charity stash at Nature's Yarns in Fairfax.
  • We'll knit, crochet, nom, and chat until 8 pm, at which point you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.

We're going to close the sign up form on Thursday, 11/8, (now closed!) and we'll get in touch with our 25 randomly chosen attendees via email by 6pm on Friday, 11/9. If you are selected, you must reply to the invitation by Tuesday, 11/13 to confirm; that will give us enough time to give your spot to another hopeful for the party on Friday.

So that's it. Use the form below to sign up The form is now closed, and we'll be in touch if the randomizer has selected you for our ThinkGeek Knit & Crochet Night!

Enter your Great Geeky Pumpkin Template

A few handy guidelines to awesomeness:

  • Submit original artwork or a concept we haven't seen before. Cutting and pasting clip art into a Word doc does not a winning template make.
  • Think about making your template big enough for an actual pumpkin. Filling a 8.5x11" standard sheet of paper with your design is a pretty good rule of thumb.
  • Templates that include impossible to carve areas (like carving a big "O" shape and then expecting the middle to stay put) won't work unless you don't carve that space completely (or specify something tricky like a toothpick to hold it in place).
  • If you have more than one design to submit, you'll need to use this form more than once.
  • We don't care where you put your template on the internets as long as it's accessible to us. We're willing to work with most filetype, but PDFs are preferred with PNGs and JPGs a close second.

UPDATE! The entry period has ended and the form has been disabled. If you didn't get to share yours in time, save it for next year. Next up: pumpkin carving at TG HQ.
