Discovery on her way back to Kennedy Space Center in 2005. Isn't this awesome!?
It may be hard to believe, but ThinkGeek exists IRL in lovely Fairfax, Virginia, and we occasionally send away teams on dangerous missions--like hanging out at Crystal Screen, having Marian Call over for a show, or eating a lot of ice cream in one sitting.
April is turning into a busy month, in fact, and the more (red shirts), the merrier! (That means you're invited, in case that wasn't clear.)
We'd love to see you at...
Thursday, April 12: Yuri's Night
Mission: To celebrate the 51st anniversary of the first human in space--Yuri Gagarin, Soviet cosmonaut, 1961--with local space geeks at a Yuri's Night DC shindig. (Bonus fact: April 12 also marks the 1st shuttle launch anniversary--STS-1, Space Shuttle Columbia, 1981.) We're providing prizes, and we expect to see a reprise of the LEGO spacecraft competition, trivia contest, and some specialty mixed drinks. (Last year? Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster and Sonic Screwdriver.)
Coordinates: Science Club, 1136 19th St NW, Washington, DC, 7pm to close. Can't make it to the Science Club party? Find a Yuri's Night party near you! Maybe we'll see you on the live broadcast that night.
Tuesday, April 17: Discovery lands at Dulles
Mission: To witness Discovery's arrival at Dulles International Airport on the back of a modified Boeing 747, like in the photo above. Crazy, right? We can't miss that and neither should you.
Coordinates: Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA, parking lot opens at 8am, $15 per vehicle. We'll be at the north end of the parking lot, or as close as we can get.
Saturday, April 21: Unofficial Discovery meetup with ThinkGeek crew
Mission: To see the new Discovery exhibit at Udvar-Hazy with ThinkGeek and friends--details forthcoming. The weekend after Discovery arrives is blocked off as a "family" event, so don't hesitate to bring the geeklings! Think you'd like to go and would you be interested in a guided tour with us? Use this form and we'll do a headcount and get back to you with our plans.
Coordinates: Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA, 10am
Friday, April 27: Ferris Bueller's Day Off movie night (eMac giveaway) at ThinkGeek HQ
Mission: To watch Ferris Bueller with ThinkGeek and local geeks, give tours of ThinkGeek HQ, raffle off some freebies, munch on pizza, aaaand give away these crazy old eMacs pictured below. You won't have to take one if you attend, but that would be really awesome if you did. We'd like to keep them out of landfills and we know there are some enterprising geeks out there that can find a good use for them.
Coordinates: ThinkGeek HQ, 11216 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030, doors at 5:30. Tickets are required and you can sign up here!
