Operation Guillaume, Pt 1: vote for movies

One of the joys of being a geek is converting friends and loved ones. It starts innocently enough--listening to "Particle Man" offhandedly in the car, watching the extended LOTR trilogy back to back at a party--but your goal is to swap lines from Mystery Science Theater 3000 and get tickets to ComicCon together.

Which is why we were delighted to learn that Guillaume, our newest codemonkey who happens to be French, was largely ignorant of our favorite American movie and television memes.

He represents the best kind of conversion opportunity: he's already a bonafied geek (a Perl programmer, even), but he's a blank slate. He's Johnny 5 before he discovered televison.

And if we do our jobs right, one day soon Guillaume will get that reference.

So we came up with a long list of our favorite movies, and we need your help, smart masses! Please take a moment and help us plan the screening schedule by picking your five most favoritest movies below:

(Starred items mean he's seen them already but we're keeping them on the list, dangit.)

UPDATE 02/05 11:26am: Top 20 so far

Our Operation Guillaume curators note that they were a little bit ashamed to leave off Real Genius, Heavy Metal, Goonies, 12 Monkeys, Galaxy Quest, Dark City, Shaolin Soccer, Sneakers, UHF, Men In Black, The Wizard, West World, Omega Man, Solaris, V For Vendetta, Terminator 2, Fifth Element, and Andromeda Strain, so thanks for your attacks helpful comments!

We also questioned our dear test subject Guillaume, who has been watching this poll with interest, and he answered thusly below (in occasional third person tense):

Q: Are you excited yet?

"I didn't think I had that much to catch up on, so it's a little scary. I guess I'll temporarily have to give up my plans for world domination until I'm up to date on all the geekness I've missed. Otherwise, "curious" best describes my feelings about the whole movie operation, as I like to learn about new things in general."

Q: What movies have you seen suggested that you don't want to watch?

"I'm lukewarm on zombie movies--I'm more of a sci-fi geek than a 'bloody and eaten alive' one. But really I'll watch anything provided that there's pizza handy."

Q: When do we start?

"As soon as we can find the movies? The test subject is usually sitting in the codemonkey treehouse from 10:30am to 8:00pm or so, so finding him should be the easiest part."

NOTE: We're not including TV series in the movie list above, but we may show an episode before each movie screening from this list: Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica*, Big Bang Theory, Buck Rogers, Dexter, Dr Who, Farscape, Firefly*, Fringe, Invader Zim, IT Crowd, Lex, LOST, Mythbusters, Quantum Leap, Red Dwarf, School House Rock: Conjunction Junction, Space 1999, Stargate, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: TOS, Venture Brothers, X-Files.

Did we miss any dead ringers? Leave a comment and maybe we'll add it into the queue!

Once we start screening, Guillaume has promised to write reviews and post them here so we can all bask in his nooby glow. Wish us luck!

meaningless icon! I don't know what my life would have been like had my parents not introduced me to such classics as Real Genius or Big Trouble in Little China when I was maybe 3. Actually, I don't want to THINK about what my life would have been like otherwise.

meaningless icon! Superbad, both Transformer films, The Big Lebowski, and Heavy Metal.

meaningless icon! I'm having a similar issue to my new girlfriend...she's from Vietnam so has seen the big stuff, but not Back To The Future and such.

meaningless icon! Too hard to pick only five.
codemyconcept said this 1639 days ago.
meaningless icon! Hey you guys.... what about the Goonies? And for TV, here are a few so-bad-they're-amazing picks: Xena, Hercules, Young Hercules, Dark Angel, oh Jessica Alba; and the 10th Kingdom, Camryn Manheim as Snow White... whodathunk.

meaningless icon! Wow, this is just too hard; I tried to select the lesser known great ones, so I picked: Buackaroo Banzai, Brazil, City of Lost Children, and then went with Holy Grail and Princess Bride... But there's so many other good ones that he has to see for sure: Bladerunner, Dr. Strangelove, Evil Dead (yay for trilogy!), Ghost in the Shell, Highlander (there IS only one movie btw :P), Last Starfighter, Legend, Logan's Run, LOTR (of course), Matrix, Neverending Story (Neverending party re: Robot Chicken anyone?), Office Space, Pi (just very cool), Planet of the Apes, Serenity for sure (and Firefly while he's at it), Shaun of the Dead (ok he saw it), KHAAAAAAAN!, Time Bandits (sensing a Gilliam-theme anyone? 12 Monkeys while we're at it of course!), TRON, Vampire Hunter D, and Willow. I mean most of the whole list are pretty much must sees but I tried to pick some of the less well-known ones assuming he'll get around to the other more famous/obvious ones (Alien/s, Indy, Conan, Matrix, Star Wars, Terminator) at some point... You really need to up the selection to 20; or at least 10! :P Oh and definitely add 12 Monkeys to the list. Oh and HELLO, you missed Galaxyquest, one of my all-time faves. And Dark City! What about Bubba Ho-Tep (going with the Bruce theme). And since you have City of Lost Children on there, you should add Delicatessan. And I love Shaolin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle too. Ok that's it for now; need to go eat lunch! ;P

meaningless icon! Sneakers and UHF
mogmios said this 1639 days ago.
meaningless icon! Smugly, I note that rather than my five faves from the list, I picked the five I acknowledge he needs to see. So like, I'm the one person on earth who didn't like Bladerunner (married to the one person on earth who didn't like Princess Bride), but I accept that it is important to see Bladerunner in order to fit in with the other monkeys. There's a big ol' reference book called the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy that handles stuff like pop culture, the bible, etc., with that kind of distance: think what you want about the Judeo-Christian creation story, you just need to grok it in order to grok society. Likewise, regardless of your personal opinion on absurdist comedy, you need to grok Monty Python in order to grok Timmy.

meaningless icon! ...or I may be overthinking it.

meaningless icon! There are 2 I was sorry not to see on the list: * Men in Black * Independence Day Hard to pick just 5 though, that's for sure.
Stasia said this 1639 days ago.
meaningless icon! I sure do love my 80's sci-fi-comedies! (BTTF, Short Circuit, Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, The Wrath of Khan... er.. waitaminute..) Anyway, I vote for "*batteries not included" to be included!

meaningless icon! What about Dungeons and Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God?
Jethreuel said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Another vote for Galaxy Quest!
knwd said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! I've already voted but he should also see: Roadhouse, West World, Omega Man, Airplane! Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles.
Ras-Algethi said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! You are a 84574Rd for making me only pick five!
SilverWhitefall said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! You're missing Solaris (Russian version, thanks! Sorry, Mr. Clooney.) and Dark City.
spivey said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! So I picked both Star Wars and Spaceballs, but obviously you need to feed him Star Wars first. Not that I really need to tell you that... I have to admit though, I thought I was a pretty good geek, but I've seen maybe half of those movies. Apparently there is a serious gap in my education. I'm a girl though, do I get bonus points for that? *bats eyelashes*
SpiritMuse said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Seconding Heavy Metal. And Xena. TV... suggesting Buffy the Vampire Slayer, esp. the musical episode, Dr. Horrible (ok, Tv*ish*), and... classic Sesame Street set us up to be geeks before we could even read. :)
deadnotsleeping said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! this was really hard, to only pick 5. i picked the five that he should absolutely see, that he hasn't. they should be seen because they are insanely quoatable, and awesome. Aliens, evil dead Trillogy, Ghostbusters, Jaws, Real Genius. all movies that have altered my mind, changed the way i think, some more than others. movies not on the list that mabye should be? Day of the Dead (and get rid of 28 days later, that should only be watched as a contrast, aka "this is what a zombie movie should never be". and iam talking about the original, of course. the remake was okay, but the other was classic.). Tremors (quadriliogy? serries? at least the first two. if not all four. Burt Gummart is my Hero). V for Vendetta (its a personal opinion, but that movie is one of my TOP FIVE movies of all time, period. saw it at least seven times in the theatres, paying for myself, and others each time). Kelly's Heros (pure FTW). and... Frailty (newer, not many people have seen it. everyone should epic movie. Great.).
OwlSaysSouth said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! 2nd ST: IV, and add Star Trek: Voyager to the TV list (Hot chicks and science WHOO!), maybe the first season of Heroes (but not any of the rest), and the last few season of ST: DS9...
Lord Ramthorn said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! definitely missing T2 imo!
erisdelphi said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! You must add in the TV list: Futurama, The Simpsons and Family Guy. As for the movies, why make him see the entire Back to the Future trilogy? The first one will give him all the reference knowledge he'll need and spare him the agony of watching the other two.
Mayja said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! The Fifth Element should be on the list so I can pick it!
purplekimchi said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Some older films, The Sting, The Maltese Falcon. How about Scanners?
skunkbear said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! No Sneakers, Andromeda Strain (1971), Outland, Silent Running....
team_venture said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Where's Resident Evil series?
Nchalada said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Twelve Monkeys should have been on the list too!
rince1wind said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! You definitely missed Goonies on the list! I still quote that 25 years later. Oh god! 25 years! That was really hard to choose only five. I too tried to pick lesser known films that defined my childhood, rather than the obvious big films.
LynnLang said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Better Off Dead, The Jerk, Blues Brothers...these are what shaped me into a trapezoid.
Saucy said this 1638 days ago.
meaningless icon! Add the rest of the Indy movies (the real ones). In not doing so, you chose poorly.
cthulhu97 said this 1637 days ago.
meaningless icon! So much to see, but I'm gonna throw two more to the list that I haven't seen anyone else suggest. Equilibrium, and The Crow.
Kristoph said this 1637 days ago.
meaningless icon! When you show t.v. episodes, don't forget "Outer Limits."
Monkeymadness said this 1635 days ago.
meaningless icon! Definitely "Galaxy Quest" and "Independence Day" as others have suggested, but what about "Escape from New York" and "Stargate"? And if you show tv shows, definitely "Firefly" and "Stargate: SG-1."
CindyKay said this 1633 days ago.
meaningless icon! I second the rec for Better Off Dead -- essence of nerditude, right there.
animammal said this 1633 days ago.
meaningless icon! How could you not include Swingers?!
Wetland Crusader Liz said this 1630 days ago.
meaningless icon! I gotta 3rd Better Off Dead and add The Dark Crystal, Gleaming the Cube, Pump Up the Volume. On the TV side--Hogfather, Dr. Who, Neverwhere. And at that, I will stop.
M-shel said this 1624 days ago.
meaningless icon! The Planet of the Apes movie series is a MUST! I've watched all 5 movies multiple times, as well as the Tim Burton version(countless).
Skertchy said this 1613 days ago.
meaningless icon! Outland is right! I think Harvey (1950) ought to be part of his curriculum as well. Of course the Monty Python flicks, Office Space, Andromeda Strain, MST3K, The Evil Dead trilogy, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Apollo 13, Capricorn One, the original Star Trek series, Fight Club-not geeky but really cool, 12 Monkeys, Fifth Element, aarrrgghhh!! I can't stop!
kerr said this 1612 days ago.
meaningless icon! Short Circuit!
lvuHeather said this 1611 days ago.
meaningless icon! How about adding Lost in Space (the one with William Hurt),The Omega Man, and October Sky! (my Tribble, 8bit, has asked that I add Miss Congeniality, Legally Blonde, and She-Wolf of London)
